The top 10 breweries in random order

1. Oedipus brewing
Based in the North of Amsterdam is Oedipus Brewery, you can recognize them easily because of their colourful beer labels. When entering the brewery, you’ll directly become happy. After a beer tasting you will feel great and probably don’t want to leave anymore.

One of their most popular beers is mannenliefde, when you translate the name it’s called ‘Man Love’. With this beer Oedipus wanted to make a statement, beer is not only fort the stereotype male which you always see in the TV commercials who are watching football and drink around the Barbecue. It’s for everybody and that message is well spread. Not only because of their great marketing campaign it’s extreme succesfull, but because it’s a great beer as well. This saison beer is now so popular that it can’t be produced anymore in their own brewery because of their high demand.

They like to experiment with a lot of different and special flavours which are not very common to use in the brewing process in Holland, but therefor not less tasty. Try the Thai Thai Tripel for instance, it’s a classic Tripel with chili and coriander! Love it!
Oedipus brewing is a popular stop of Brew Bus Amsterdamyou get a beer tasting and, depending on the route and schedule, a brewery tour as well.

2. Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater
In Amsterdam-Oost, you'll find Poesiat & Kater. They initially brewed their beers in the tasting room at Polderweg 648. However, due to their fantastic beers and entrepreneurial owners, the brewery became too small, and they had to relocate to a different location in Amsterdam. They adopted the classic recipes from the Van Vollenhoven brewery and brought them back to life after many years. Even though the brewery itself is quite young, it means they might have some of the oldest beers in the city. Try the "Van Vollenhoven Stout," and you'll be hooked!

In addition to a tasting room, they also have a fantastic restaurant, located in an old animal shelter, making the location truly unique.

3. Brouwerij Friekens

This is a hidden gem, far north in Amsterdam, you'll find Friekens Brewery. One of my all-time favorites! Brewer and owner Sid has a passion for beer, and when you taste Friekens' beers, you can truly sense it, no joke! The brewery is located in a former locker room of a soccer team, and you can still see that when you enter the brewery.
Since it's not easily accessible by public transport, the best way to visit the brewery is to take the Brew Bus to this exciting place. In addition to a beer tasting, you also get an excellent brewery tour!

4. Prael Amsterdam

This is the ‘pearl of Amsterdam. The Prael is a beauty, because of an excisting beer which is the ‘parel’(pearl in English) in the south of the Netherlands they needed to change the name of the brewery. The new name de Prael might even better!
Great thing about the Prael is that they want to give everybody a chance in the labor market, so people with a distance tot he labor market have a big chance to succeed when applying for a job! This means that besides a great brewery, it’s a social place as well with a great restaurant.

5. Krux

They say it’s the smallest brewery in Amsterdam, Krux brouwwerf is located in the east of Amsterdam, with a lot of new built houses and apartments. The building of the brewery itself is already many years old and used to be the headquarters of an old oil factory.

The beer brewed in this brewery goes directly into tanks above the bar, so fresher beer than Krux beer is not possible.

6. Heineken brewery

Of course, the Heineken Experience is a "must-visit." It's incomparable to the other breweries in Amsterdam, but it's definitely worth it. It takes you through the rich history of Heineken and gives you insight into the world of Heineken. The Heineken Experience is interactive, fun, and you also get the chance to drink the beers. Two beers are included in the ticket price, and if you book your ticket through Brew Bus Amsterdam, you even get a small discount.

7. Walhalla brewery

The brewery of the beer of the gods is located in Amsterdam North, named Walhalla Brewing. They are well known for their strong IPAs, and craft beer enthusiasts will love this place. You also get the opportunity to take the canned beers with you. One of their most famous beers is "Loki," a lightly refreshing golden IPA, to be honest, you could drink it all day long.

8. Brouwerij Troost

Troost Brewery has several breweries in Amsterdam. The brewery at the Westergas Terrein is the largest of their breweries in the city. Troost Brewery means comfort, and at Troost Brewery, you can find comfort. They have excellent beer tastings and very interesting flavors. A sustainable brewery where they use cans instead of bottles. They started as owners of various cafés in Amsterdam and found that all the regular beers they served were not really special. That's why they decided to dive into the brewery industry. They are now the largest independent brewery in Amsterdam. A very nice success story!

9. Brouwerij Breugem

In Amsterdam West, you'll find Breugem Brewery, where they give people who, in one way or another, have a distance to the job market, a chance for employment. Founder and co-owner Patrick Breugem may be the best brewer in Amsterdam. At Breugem, they like to enrich the beer culture with classic styles, and the hip Craft beer styles are also well represented. Definitely worth a visit for beer lovers!

10. Brouwerij Piek

Just outside Amsterdam (Zaandam) is Piek Brewery. This brewery likes to nod to the past. "Piek" was the nickname of the predecessor of the Euro, the Dutch Guilder. Each beer style from Piek Brewery refers to a nickname of a specific Guilder banknote. For example, they have "Het Geeltje" (the Yellow) and "De Joet." Can you guess what amount the nicknames refer to? High-quality, excellent beer and special people working here. This brewery definitely belongs in this top 10 list of breweries in Amsterdam.

Brewery tour Amsterdam

The breweries are spread throughout the city and are not all easily accessible. If you want the best experience, take the Brew Bus Amsterdam.
